Following last years successful return to competition in the Manx Music Festival ('The Guild'), we again entered the Hymn and March, and the 20 minute programme classes in this years festival.

For the Hymn and March class, MD John Collings chose to play the famous march Arnhem by Albert E Kelly and an arrangement of the hymn tune Crimond, arranged by Les Hartill. There are close connections between Castletown and both of these pieces. Arnhem was written to commemorate Operation Market Garden during the Second World War, which was the operation in which Castletown resident and local hero Major Robert Cain VC was awarded his Victoria Cross. The hymn tune Crofton was originally composed by Dr John Clague, a resident of Castletown, and Les Hartill was a former player in our band.

The entertainment class was a real feast of good music by all bands. John had chosen a programe of music from around the world for our set. We started with another march, this time Holyrood and followed it up with the traditional Moari tune Hine e Hine arranged by Peter Graham. Our solo for the evening was a latin style arrangement of This Is My Story played by our principal cornet Brian Osborn, followed by our finale, Alloway Tales, also by Peter Graham.

Although we didn't win any of the prizes this year, the remarks from the adjudicator were all positive and we had the second highest marks for our march, Arnhem.
