Ian AstillDue to ill health the bands Musical Director John Collings has had to stand down from the role, however the band are pleased to announce that they have appointed Ian Astill as their new Musical Director.

Ian has a long association with Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band, having been taught as a youngster by Major JE ‘Tommy’ Thirtle, a previous musical director. Having been a member of the band during his youthful years he went on to study music at the Royal Northern College of Music and then to Bangor University to study for his PGCE. Between his studies he stepped into the MD role following the resignation of a previous MD, and then following them he returned to the island, and to the band playing Euphonium.

On Johns’ standing down, Band Secretary Simon Court thanked him for all the work and commitment over the last few years and said ‘the band are looking forward to John returning to play and bolstering the bass section’.

The band are now preparing for the usual busy Christmas period starting playing carols for a couple of local organisations followed by Songs Around the Christmas Tree in Castletown Square on Saturday 7th December at 4:30pm.

A full list of Christmas engagements will be published shortly.
