Saddleworth here we come!

A band made up of a core of Castletown Band players with friends from Rushen Silver, Ramsey Town and Douglas Town Bands, as well as a number of ex-Royal Northern College of Music colleagues of our musical director, is heading to the West Pennines to take part in the annual Whit Friday marches.

This is the first time that most of us have taken part in this famous competition which takes place in about 13 villages around the Oldham and Saddleworth area. Each village holds it’s own competition which consists of bands marching into the village whilst playing a march and then performing  a showpiece on whatever passes for a rostrum. They then award prizes for various categories including best youth band, best soloist, best march and so on. However for bands that play at 6 contests or more, there is an overall prize which uses the average of their best 6 scores to determine an overall winner.

We’ll be heading over on the morning of Friday 24th May and picking up a coach which will transport us round a number of the villages, which ones hasn’t been decided yet. Hopefully we’ll have some photographs to share when we return.
