14/03/2012 World Premiere

The audience at Castle Rushen High School on Sunday afternoon for Castletown Bands concert at the end of a weekends intensive rehearsing, were treated to the World Premiere of Leigh Bakers’ arrangement, ‘Carol of a Kingdom’. This arrangement of a traditional Manx carol was specially arranged and dedicated by Leigh to the Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band following discussion with the bands new Associate Musical Director David Horsfield.

David has been coming to the island to work with the band and its Musical Director Rodney Evans for the last 3 years, each visit culminating in a concert featuring a special work. This year, as well as working on Vaughan Williams English Folk Songs Suite, the band decided it would be a fitting occasion for the first airing of ‘Carol of a Kingdom’.

The arrangement features 2 cornets, flugel, euphonium, an Eb Bass and the tenor horn and trombone sections. Commenting on the performance afterwards, David said ‘you can have lots of black notes on a page being very loud and very fast, but sometimes it’s those quiet moments that make a performance, and we had 1 or 2 of them today’.

Full report on the concert and the weekend to follow.
