Euphonium
Married to Margaret (1st Tenor Horn) I started to learn to play cornet in 1957 at The Royal Hospital School (boarding school for sons of Royal and Merchant Navy personnel) in Suffolk, England. The school had a marching brass band complete with drums, cymbals, bugles and a Drum Major. Unfortunately there was no opportunity to do music grades unlike most schools today. I left school in 1962 and joined the Darwen and Hoddlesden Silver Band (later known as Darwen British Legion Band) as 3rd Cornet eventually ending up on Flugel and also tutti cornet. In 1969 I moved to Northern Ireland where I joined Newtownards Silver Band on tutti cornet, and in 1976 I moved to the Isle of Man and joined Castletown Band. I started on cornet moving onto soprano cornet for a while and then onto 2nd euphonium (around 1990) next to the late George Kewley. George was a wonderful player ever modest and my only regret is that I did not move to euphonium much earlier as I would have learned a great deal more from him. I have also spent time as Band Librarian, Deputy Conductor and now look after the instrument inventory and organise repairs etc.
